Powersurge possesses the strength of a man his height, weight and build that engages in intensive regular exercise. When subliminating his mutant energies he is capable of lifting/pressing up to 11 tons under optimal conditions, and for short durations of time.

Powers:
Powersurge has the mutant ability to generate massive amounts of energy. He can surround himself in an aura of this energy that is intense enough to slag reinforced concrete and solid steel, and fire focused bolts of energy capable of slagging osmium steel. While his energy field is up he can also fly at speeds of up to 225 mph.

Powersurge can also subliminate his mutant energies, thereby increasing his strength to the above listed levels for short durations of time. During this time he cannot use any of his other energy generation powers without immediately dispelling the increased strength.

The ultimate expression of his power however has been dubbed his "pulse-blast" and involves a consilidation and release of all the latent mutant energies contained in his body. The resulting blast is en pare with only the largest of conventional explosives, and outdone only by nuclear explosions at ground zero. However, this attack places massive strain on Powersurge's nervous system, consistently leaving him weakened and stunned, and even causing him to suffer from a massive heart attack on one occassion.

Paraphenalia: Powersurge wears a specially designed suit of protective armour that is virtually immune to the energies he generates and which is capable of deflecting small arms fire.

History:
Little is known about the mutant that would come to be known as Powersurge prior to the manifestation of his powers. Jason Fontaine is known to have been born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to John and Claudette Fontaine, and, as far as can be told, he was your average Canadian teenager; noteworthy and distinguishable from his peers only in his religious interest in the heroes and deities of his NW European heritage.

The activation of Jason's latent mutant powers came at the late age of 18, when returning home from a friend's late one night, he was jumped by a trio of thugs. As he attempted to defend himself, his stress level rose ever higher, and soon enough energy began to whisp and leak out of his body, until he was enveloped by a pulsating aura of it. The thugs fled at the sight, but the energy field continued to pulsate about Jason's body, growing more and more intense and smothering, before at last it erupted in one violent and far reaching explosion. When Jason regained his senses, he saw the surrounding park and a number of nearby office and residential buildings had been absolutely devasted, and scores of people undoubtedly killed. His parents amongst them.

Horrified at what he had done, Jason fled Winnipeg, seeking to put as much distance as he could between him and human life. He eventually came to rest in the Canadian northlands, where he was approached by Wolverine and offered both asylum and the oppurtunity to learn how to control his powers at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters in Upstate N.Y. After teaming up with the X-Man to fight off a sneak attack launched by Department H's Epsilon Troopers, Jason accepted the offer and accompanied Wolverine to the States.

After but a short time at the X-Mansion Jason proved himself to be an exceptional student, with strong mental discipline, a strong heroic ethic, and very strong leadership skills. Some even fancied him "another Cyclops". Thus, when Jason showed an incredible aptitude in the mastery of his powers, it did not take long before he was given hius graduating costume and codenamed "Pulsator"; due to the way his energy aura pulsates around his body.



However, in spite of his quick rise to glory, Jason's stint as an X-Man did not last long. His only significant field mission with them took place when an interdimensional traveller calling himself Drathlor the Travelmaster hurled them into the Sentinel dominated future ... threatening to "align" this "time zone" with their own "time zone" if they failed to find a way back within a week. During the course of this mission, the X-Men contacted a mutant underground, led an ill-fated rebellion, and penetrated an installation rumoured to hold an experimental timetravel device. Reaching this device, they returned to their own time, where Drathlor forced them into battle by threatening to align the "time-zones" anyway. After a major rumble however, Drathlor jovially submitted and agreed to honour the terms of his game.



During the course of this mission, Jason and Rogue, whose relationship had always been something of a love-hate deal, ie. fear of hrting others with their powers, came to learn that their altnerate-future selves had not only married, but had also had a child; suggesting the possibility that they were able to touch each other without ill effects. Nevertheless, while an new level of intimacy began to evolve between them, their deeply ingrained fear of hurting others with their powers served as a great strain on both sides.

Thus, when mysteriously approached by an American representative of the United Nations soon after their return, and offered a place on a new superhero team called the Protectors, Jason was driven to accept.

The United Nations Project: Protectors was originally devised in order to facilitate super-powered responses to international threats and in answer to a growing awareness amongst certain segments of Earth's governments of the existence of extraterrestials.

Based on a small island off the coast of Athens, Greece, dubbed Alpha Base One, the Protectors were serviced by a staff of top-notch nutritionists, physical trainers, combat specialists, psychologists and various technical support staff. Perhaps the greatest feature of the AB1 however, was it's super-computer, Byte, which had a highly advanced form of Artifical Intelligence capable of incredible powers of deductive reasoing and logic, and patched into the memory banks of participant multi-national states from across the globe (to various degrees).

After a time of set-up, preparation and intensive study and training of the superhumans involved, the Protectors were offically unveiled to the world, with Pulsator renamend "Powersurge" and presented as the teams field commander. He was joined by the beautiful Russian light manipulator called Starlight, a surly German with absolutely massive energy absorption powers named Energon, a stunning British telepath named Psiona, a hotheaded Scotman capable of generating forcefields and kinetic bolts named Force, a technological genius and practioner of bushido named Examiner, and a Swede that claimed to be the kinsman, and in every way the equal of Thor who called himself Thak of Asgard.

As the leader of the Protectors, Powersurge fought such well known threats as the Kree and Ronan the Accuser, Terrax the Tamer and Dr. Doom, Gladiator and the Imperial Guard, the Super-Skrull, Galactus(!!!), such less known threats (ie. homebrew) as the Shadowlord, Dominion and the Geoforce, and Drathlor, and on the odd occassion even such hero-groups as the Avengers, the West Coast Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and Alpha Flight.

Their battle with the Kree and Ronan revolved around a plot by the Supreme Intelligence to reignite the gene-pool of the Kree by using the genetic material of Earth's greatest heroes. This brought the enw team into direct conflict with a variety of Earth's hero teams, but thanks to various telepaths involved, the Protectors were ultimately able to free their peers and send both Ronan and the Kree packing.

Their battle with Galactus began when a starving Galactus again threatened to consume Earth; building his world-devouring machinery on Mount Olympus. Much of their success in this battle was based on Psiona's ability to link all minds to the Examiner, who could thus easily share his knowledge of Galactus' weak spots with the rest of his teammates. The finishing blow however was landed when all energy manipulators pumped everything they had into Energon, who redirected it all into Galactus' face.

The Protector's had little time to enjoy their victory however before the Examiner noticed an entropic field begin to eminate from Galactus, growing in direct correlation to his dwindling life signs, and threateneing to unravel the very fabric of the physical universe. Luckily, Examiner was able to tweak Galactus world devouring machine and restore him to a fair state of health thanks to the various energy generators present. With this, Galactus renewed hispledge to never devour the Earth and resumed his search for a more suitable planet.

As with a similar scenario that played itself out with the Fantastic Four, this invited a dire response from the Shi'ar Empire, who sent not only Gladiator, but also a number of members of the Imerial Guard to Earth in order to bring the Protectors to account for saving Galactus' life.

While ultimately successful in driving off the Shi'ar force, it was during this battle that Powersurge suffered a massive heart attack, when he fired off a focused "pulse-blast" at Gladiator in order to aid in his defeat without risking the lives of his teammates of damaging the surrounding city.



In the Shadowlord arc, the Protectors were sent in to the investigate a massive dome of darkness that had engulfed Moscow and which was slowly growing. All troops sent in to investigate had failed to return or report back.

After fighting their way past numerous "shadow demons", the Protectors at last confronted by a being calling itself the Shadowlord. He boasted that he was unleashing the stuff of the Darkforce Dimension into our world, using a mystical crystal known as the Shadow Portal, in hopes of transforming it to his liking and taking it for himself. In the end, the battle came down to Starlight and the Shadowlord, and it was she who sacrificed her life to shatter the Shadow Portal and hurl the Shadowlord back into his own dimension.

While other missions would follow, and rosters change, this mission was particualrly hard on Powersurge due to the romance that had begun to grow between him and Starlight.

Unfortunately, conflict with such participant nations as the USA and Russia, not to mention Canada-- which suspected that Powersurge was the same superbeing responsible for the "Winnipeg Incident" -- along with other completely unintelligable political nonsense ultimately led to the collapse of the program and the disbandment of the team.



As Rogue and the X-Men had since been reported dead in an incident that occurred in Dallas, Texas, Powersurge fell into a mild depression and returned to Winnipeg to work as an armoured car security guard under the name Thomas Hayes.

It eventually came to pass however that an Epsilon Shuttle crashlanded just outside of the city, and Powersurge could not help but investigate However, no sooner had he changed and arrived at the site of the wreckage, when he was confronted by the synthetic superbeing, Thunder, who claimed to be working for Department H and demanded that Powersurge surrender himself for questioning. This quickly resulted in a skirmish between the two heroes that ended when Powersurged slagged the engine of an approaching Epsilon Shuttle and escaped as Thunder went to it's rescue.

Early the next evening, the armoured car Powersurge was piloting in his civilian identity was attacked by a trio of superpowered thugs calling themselves the Powermongers. The surprise encounter left both Powersurge and his fellow guard unconscious, but when the former X-Man at last regained consciousness he heard a pitched battle being fought in the derelict section of downtown Winnipeg.

Once again unable to resist the urge to help, Powersurge activated his energy sheathe, burning off his clothes in the process, and then made for the site of the battle. There he found Thunder locked in combat with the Powermongers, and quickly came to the synthoid's assistance.

However, with two of the three Powermongers down and another Epsilon Shuttle approaching Powersurge made a hasty exit. When Thunder began to pursue, Powersurge began to race south for the Canada/US border, until at last giving in to Thunder's amplified pleas to stop and talk.

This talk was quite brief and filled with uncertainty on behalf of the synthoid, and much disdain on behalf of Powersurge. Thus, it was not long before another battle between the two erupt, with Thunder coming in close and attempting to sucker punch the renegade mutant. As a veteran of many battles, Powersurge anticipated this attack, and it was not long before the muchly weakened Thunder was knocked out. With that Powersurge abandoned his Thomas Hayes identity, and fled for Toronto and a back-up identity.

He would soon resurface when Toronto fell under attack by an alien threat known as the Consortium; joining Alpha Flight, the Avengers, and Thunder in the city's defense. While some of the Alphans and Avengers were ill-at-ease with Powersurge's prescence, these feelings were eased by Captain America -- who formed a mutual respect with Powersurge while the mutant still led the Protectors. So, left in charge of the ground force meant ot fight back the tide of Consortium troops as Cap and his groups sought to strike at the heart of the Mother Ship, Powersurge proceeded to put on a clinic on planetary defense.



When all was said and done, Powersurge and Captain America stepped aside for a private discussion in which Cap mourned Powersurge's abscence from the superhero community, and encouraged him to have faith in the system/s and the people they had both risked their lives to uphold and defend, and turn himself in to the Canadian authorites. He added that the circumstances of the Winnipeg Incident would not be overlooked anymore than Powersurge's track record as leader of the Protectors, and even if all of Wolverine's thoughts and fears of Department H came true, that powerful people would be tracking the matter.

Thus, with Cap's assurance, Powersurge turned himself into Alpha Flight and thence was handed over to the Canadian authorities.

After being turned over to the Canadian authorities, Powersurge spent a brief period in a detention cell in Department H's main HQ in Ottawa, as he awaited his trial.

This trial was attended by such noteables as Dr. Moira MacTaggert, as well as a number of UN officials connected to the old Protectors project, including two of Powersurge's former teammates, the Japanese Examiner and the Scottish Battlehammer. Various demonstrators outside of the courthouse ran the gamut from admirers and well-wishers to anti-mutant hate-mongerers, but the peace was nevertheless maintained.

The closed door trial was relatively brief, straight forward and matter-of-fact. In the end, Powersurge, under his own encouragement, was "sentenced" to a five year term of service as a super-powered agent of Department H following which he would be granted a full pardon.

However, as Powersurge was being led out of the courthouse to an awaiting Epsilon Shuttle, a number of 10' tall robots, reminscient of Sentinels descended from the sky. Despite the best efforts of the Epsilon Guards, not to mention the attending Examiner, Battlehammer, and GenTech's newest synthoid hero, Morningstar, Powersurge was knocked unconscious and borne off.



The mutant was taken to a secret facility contained in Mount Caubvik (aka Mont d'Iberville) in the Torngat Mountains that span the border between Quebec and Labradour. There he briefly met the acquaintence of a man named Randal North, a former Brigadiere-General in the C.A.F. (Canadian Armed Forces) who lost his wife and family in the "Winnipeg Incident". North explained that it was his duty to do what the Canadian government refused to ... protect it's citizenry from rogue superpowered beings and ensure they are punished to the full extent for their crimes; without regard for the bleeding hearts, their agendas, special interests and double standards.

In fact, as North elaborated, years ago, when the government decided to scrap the Flight Program in favour of something more "obedient", his "Project: Failsafe" was one of the proposals offered up as an alternative. It lost the contract to Jeremy Clarke's Epsilon Program, and North retired soon after.

Nevertheless, North continued to pursue his "dream", and with the aid of certain "benefactors" was able to build this base ... which served as both a Sentinel production plant and as a detention facility. North went on to explain that, far from putting Powersurge to death, he would be detained and used as a power source in order to bring production to full and speed up the completion of his army of peacekeeping Sentinels.

In the end however, Powersurge was rescued thanks to the combined efforts of Morningstar, Examiner and Battlehammer, while North seemingly plummetted to his death and/or was destroyed in a subsequent explosion that blew the peak off of Mount Caubvik.

Severely weakened from this ordeal, Powersurge spent the next several weeks in Department H's medical facility. Upon regaining consciousness, he soon learned that both Rogue and the X-Men did not die in the Dallas Incident, but were indeed alive and well and currently involved in a SHIELD sanctioned mission to stop yet another of Magneto misguided plots.

As fate would have it, it was not long after his recovery that Powersurge was sent in to aid Alpha Flight in a battle being waged in downtown Toronto against a group of rogue mutants. This group of rogue mutants turned out to be none other than the X-Men. After recovering from his initial uncertainty, a reluctant Powersurge undertook his duty and half-heartedly entered the battle on the side of Alpha Flight. However, it was not long before both groups found themselves confronted by a group of fantasy superheroes drawn straight out of the comicbooks; the Justice League! As it turned out, these fantasy superheroes had been brought to life by the imagination of a young and very sick mutant, Brent Smithers. Following a titanic battle which saw AF and the X-Men standing united against the power of the JL, the young mutants power levels at last began to subside and the last of his creations, Superman, was defeated.

Prior to the return of the X-Men to the States, Powersurge and Rogue shared a moment; uninterrupted thanks to Wolverine. They discussed all that had transpired in their lives since they last saw each, their supposed "future" together and feelings for each other, and the mutual uncertainty of them getting together as a couple anytime soon. Nevertheless, they parted on good terms, wishing each other the best and leaving the metaphoric "bridge" intact and unburned.

As the X-Men left, Morningstar and Powersurge had a brief encounter in which the mutant thanked the synthoid for rescueing him from Randal North and his Project: Failsafe facility. The two clasped hands in mutual respect, and weeks later the two would again bump into each in the corridors of Department H, where Powersurge again thanked the synthoid and gave him a contact number if he should ever require any assistence.



Powersurge's was once again sent into action when the super-powered vigilantes, Canucklehead and Roughrider, got into a skirmish with the police in downtown Toronto. The duo had foiled a bank robbery, but a civilian was killed by a stray bullet (frolm the robbers) in the process and they forcefully refused to submit themselves to police for questioning following the incident. Backed up by a team of rookie Epsilon Troopers, Powersurge confronted the duo and urged them to surrender before they made matters worse for themselves and further endangered others, but he was promptly mind blasted and left severely stunned by Canucklehead, before both he and Roughrider tore into the Epsilon's. However, when Morningstar happened upon the seen by chance, he managed to keep the vigilantes busy long enough for Powersurge to recover. And with his recovery, the tide of the fight began to quickly turn against the superpowered bikers.

Before a victory could be decided however, the third floor of a business building up the street exploded. Powersruge quickly turned everyone's attention to the dozens upon dozens of streaks of light, meteors as it turned out, descending from the sky towards the city. Both he and Morningstar immediately took to the air in a frantic attempt to decimate as many of the metoers as possible before impact, while Canucklehead and Roughrider engaged in damage control on the ground saving as many people as possible from the incidently effects of multiple meteor stirkes. Nevertheless, when all was said and done, the vigilantes were nowhere to be found, and Toronto looked as though it had just suffered a massive artillery strike.

History: Update

Following the meteor strike in Toronto, both Powersurge and Morningstar aided the cities emergency teams in their relief efforts. Within the space of a few hours however, they were summoned to Department H and quickly ushered into a briefing room.

Within they found gathered some two dozen or so costumed superheroes; the members of Alpha Flight foremost amongst them. At the front of the briefing room stood Department H's Chief Director, General Jeremy Clarke, a man most recognized as the Commander of of the Epsilon Division, Brigadiere-General Norman McArther, and a female aid.

Clark quickly settled the room and then began to speak of how 6 days ago a number of space observatories thorughout the world spotted an enormous swarm of meteors break free from the asteroid belt that sperarates the inner and outer solar system, and begin on a course that hasty estimations suggested could potentially intersect with Earth. The Fantastic Four were soon mustered to investigate this phenomenon, determine what threat it might pose to the planet, and if necessary author a solution, but contact with them was lost soon after they began their approach on the swarm. Mere momenets following this loss of contact, the speed of the meteor swarm increased, exponentially, reaching Earth earlier today and reigning destruction down, not ony on Toronto, but on major cities across the globe -- Tokyo, Hong Kong, Jerusalem, Athens, Rome, Paris, London, New York, Toronto itself, and then finally, Mexico City and Vancouver.

Activating a wall monitor, Clarke brought up an image of the costumed villain, Graviton, before going onto explain that the meteor strikes were clearly not "acts of God", but precision strikes orchastrated by the man on the monitor; Franklin Hall by birth, a Canadian scientist who gained massive gravitional powers following an accident that occured while working at a private research facility in the Canadian Rockies. Clarke added that Graviton had resurfaced in Toronto not all that long ago, before momentarily turning the floor over to Morningstar. The synthoid told of how several weeks ago he witnessed the collpase of a residential high rise in downtwon Toronto and upon investigating, found Graviton hovering high above the ruin. Upon approach the villian effortlessly sent him plummeting back to earth before hurling him off the face of the Earth itself and into orbit.

With that, General Clarke clicked the remote in his hand and brought two new images onto the monitor, of a man and a woman, befroe taking control of the briefing once again. He explained that the man and the woman were Mr. and and Mrs. Joseph and Judy Sinclair. They had worked alongside Graviton in the months leading up to accident that gave him his powers. Hall had reportedly been obsessed with Judy, and she sat at the centre of an incident in which the newly empowered Graviton took over the research facility they all worked at, levitated it, to Manhattan, and then handily defeated the Avengers. The America supergroup managed a reversal of fortunes only by playing on Hall's infatuation for Judy. As chance would have it, both Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair were tenets of the collapsed highrise and both were perished in the disaster.

After a moments pause, Clarke told the room that 20 minutes ago goverments across the globe received the following video message. Clicking the remote again, a video of Graviton begins to play in which he identified himself, claimed responsiblity for the meteor strikes, and gave the leaders of the world 36 hours to acknowledge him as their overlord or face another, even greater, bombardment.

With that, Clarke emphasized the power of Graviton, and placed all heroes on high alert; explaining that most would be deployed with Epsilon units across the country, while others would receive special details.

Both Powersurge and Morningstar were briefly sent back to Toronto; where they learned that 4 enormous planet destroying meteors had been detected en route for Earth. And also that, with the discovery of a gravitational anomoly high in Earth's orbit by the Japanese hero the Examiner, the U.S. had decided for immediate action; sending the Avengers (complimented by the mightiest of the West Coast Avengers) to investigate the anomoly, and hopefully confront and defeat Graviton, while Thor was sent to the outer fringes of the inner solar system to deal with the slow moving planet destroyers.

Soon enough, Powersurge and Morningstar were summoned back to Department H. They were gathered by Brigadiere-General McArther into a small brieifing room along with Major Mapleleaf and Major Mapleleaf Junior. He informed them that intel had placed Graviton in the company of the mutant Gypsymoth no more than a year ago, and that the West Coast Avengers, Hawkeye and Mockingbird, followed this lead. While unable to apprehend the mutant herself, a number of Graviton's notes were found on her premises in which passing mention of an A.I.M. project called the "Gravity Well" was mentioned in passing. As luck would have it, a joint investiagation of the hi-tech arms distributor, Fabricators Inc., which followed on the heels of the death of Morningstar's predecessor, Thunder, revelaed a link between the black market distributor and A.I.M. There investigation also turned up the possible location of an A.I.M. facility beneath the Helmsley Building in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The heroes were thence sent to Vancouver to particpate in a raid on the facility. Circumventing or simply punching their way through the bases defenses - - which included forcefields, reinforced titanium doors, lasrer turrets, and a squadron of mercs outfitted with hi-tech battle armour - - the heroes at last gained control of the facility and it's computers; thus allowing Epsilon technical experts to move in and finish the job.

It was consequently discovered that the "Gravity Well" was the codename of an A.I.M. spacestation that was doing reserarch into the creation and control of micro-blackholes. It had been lost to "forces unknown" roughly 3 months earlier.

As the troop of heroes began to climb back into the Epsilon Shuttle that carried them westward and head back to Ottawa, a communication was received that while Thor had managed to pulverize two of the four planet detroying meteors, contact with the Avengers had been lost, the remaining two planet destroyers had vastly increased their speed, and another moetoer swarm had begun to pummel the Earth from the thin ring that now surrounded the planet. As a result of these events, Powersurge and Morningstar were to procede immediately to Vancouver Airport. There they would be greated by a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and escorted to the Helicarrier.

By order of the U.N. Security Council, Project: Protectors had been reinstated.

Nice to see your game's still going, and with such a nasty threat...

And I liked the mention of Fabricators, Inc. -- they always were one of my favorite bits out of the old Palladium Villains Unlimited book

And yeah, Fabricators Inc. was one of the cooler ideas presented in the Villains Unlimited sourcebook.

They figured prominently in the campaign of Morningstar's synthoid predecessor, Thunder, in which they were providing arms to a newly emerging gang, the Cyberknights, headed up by the teenage mutant brat, Little Princess. After her defeat/disappearance, thanks to the combined efforts of Thunder and Major Mapleleaf Senior, the investigation into the arms dealer continued and eventually both Jackhammer and Voltaic (renamed Voltiac, Volt + Maniac = .... ) were drawn into the campaign. Jackhammer easily proved to be the more colourful and most hated of the super-powered enforcers... at one point threateneing to escape custody, track down a woman Thunder had saved during his scuffle with Jackhammer, and demonstrate the other reason why he was called Jackhammer.... describing in detail what a man with super strength could do to a normal woman. Thunder wanted to kill him right there in the back of the paddywagon!

Over time, connecting them to A.I.M. seemed a logical and convenient way to solidify the organizations place in the M.U.

and i always saw Fabricators as the logical extension of what the Tinkerer provides... sorta Tinkerer meets Obadiah Stane or Justin Hammer

TRANSCRIPT: POWERSURGE INTERVIEW

(the following is the transcript of a televised interview conducted by reporter Tanya Sullivan with Powersurge soon following his trial)


Tanya Sullivan: So you are the mutant responsible for the Winnipeg Incident in which thousands of people were killed?

Powersruge: Yes ma’am.

TS: Now, I understand that the incident has been ruled the legal equivalent of an Act of God, but even so how does it make you feel, knowing you were the “agent of destruction” in a Canadian catastrophe rivalled only by …. The Halifax Explosion?

Ps: How did it make me feel? Terrified of myself. Horrified at the loss of life, the pain and suffering I caused. Emotionally overwhelmed. Desperate for help. Lost. But how does it make me feel today? Mournful, but driven.

TS: So you have laid those ghosts to rest, then?

Ps: Yes and no. I’ll never feel like I’ve washed my hands of them. The memory will always drive me, but I’m not haunted by it. I’ve had a handle on it for awhile now. And the recent trial has only served to strength my grip.

TS: Good to hear. Superpowers and psychopathology make for a poor mix. But you said the memory “drives” you? To risk your life engaging in acts of heroism?

Ps: Yes.

TS: Hmmm, maybe some forms of psychopathology do mix well with superpowers?

(general laughter)

TS: But seriously Powersurge, is that why you demanded some form of, errr, “penance” from the court at the close of your recent trial?

Ps: Yes. People died. I was the source of their destruction. No matter that I could not possibly have known I had this power. It happened. And its on me.

TS: Are you scared that it could happen again, say, in the heat of combat?

Ps: Well, its always a concern of course, but not as much of a concern as, say, the grenade dangling from a soldiers battle harness. I’ve come a long way since my powers first manifested. For one, I know about my powers now, which is half the battle right there. And I’ve been guided not only in my mastery of those powers by some of the best teachers the world has to offer, but also in their public use. My powers are very much under my control.

TS: I think a lot of us might be curious, Powersurge; given the manifestation of your powers, how do you feel about a Mutant Registration Act?

Ps: ……. (long pause) ……. I think that catastrophe’s such as the Winnipeg Incident could be entirely avoidable with the early detection of potential mutancy. So, I believe that governments have a responsibility to be looking for potential mutancy at birth, and instituting programs such as James Hudson’s “Flight program” in order to both help these super powered beings and protect the population.

TS: So are you saying you’d be in favour of such an Act directed specifically at mutants?

Ps: It really depends upon the particulars of such an Act. Not to suggest that being a mutant is a disease, but mutancy should be approached in a similar, medical fashion. It’s not a legal concern, but a social and health concern, IMO.

TS: So then, what are your thoughts on super-powered vigilantism?

Ps: ……… (long pause) ………. That’s a tough one, ma’am. For most of my career I’ve been sanctioned and accountable to a recognizable authority. I feel that I have benefited substantially as a result of that relationship. But I’ve also operated unsanctioned, and know a fair number of men and women of the highest moral fibre that have done likewise. Of course, these are the “iconic” heroes, the one’s that have been around for years, who have saved the world, and who regularly appear in the national and international news. Most of them have training comparable to mine. However, there are a lot of other would-be superheroes out there, who most of us wouldn’t know from a hole in the wall, and who regularly make decisions based only on what’s immediately evident in a situation. They end up causing more harm than good. Even at best all they manage is “good enough”. And that’s just not good enough where lives are concerned.

So long as a country has evolved it’s laws, institutions and culture in response to the growth of it’s superhuman population, such as with Canada, then I think that we are obliged to respect the law. If one wants to use their powers to fight crime, formal avenues exist to do exactly that. On the other hand, if a state is lagging in it’s response, well, I couldn’t blame anyone for not allowing a bunch of super-villains to “rule the field” while the state plays catch up or whatever. Either way, that’s between the country in question, its officials, the people, and their heroes. My general opinion is whatever brings the greatest good to the greatest number. If we can bring the good to all, then so much the better, but the greater number isn‘t a bad second best.

TS: I like that answer. So let’s move along now … you used to be the field commander of the U.N.‘s “Protectors” super-group; albeit representing the U.S., not Canada. Tell us what it was like leading the such a prestigious team? Saving the world? Rubbing shoulders with the likes of Captain America, Iron Man, and Hercules.

Ps: …. (chuckles to self) …. Well, its not like leading the national hockey team, you know? We dealt with very BIG situations. Life or death BIG. On a planetary scale BIG. So I don’t want to give the wrong impression. It was incredibly stressful. The consequences of failure were terrifying, especially on those occasions when you see even your biggest “brains” -- guys who know what the hell Reed Richards is talking about -- struggling to comprehend some of the things we were up against.

TS: Yep, like I said, psychopathology and superpowers. Hmmm … maybe there’s a connection to it all???

Ps: … (chuckles) … maybe … but with all of that insanity as a given, to have accomplished the things we accomplished on behalf of the world is …. tremendously satisfying.

TS: A solve on a guilty conscience, as some might ask?

Ps: Sure. It actually involves a lot of different things, on a lot of different levels, but, at least for me, that is definitely one of them. It’s how I manage my guilt. Ummm, I thought we were moving along into lighter stuff?

TS: Me too, so lets do so now … so, what you’re saying is you found a lot of pride in it?

Ps: Yes. Exactly. I’m very proud of the work I did as a Protector, and feel that I was greatly enriched by the quality of the people I worked alongside. I can’t say we “rubbed shoulders” with many of the American superheroes. In that way it kinda was like World Cup Hockey.

(general laughter)

Ps: But meeting Captain America was an honour to be sure, and really, like I said, these heroes are of some of the strongest moral fibre you could ask for. Good people, all of them, with strong leadership.

TS: So, what’s it like to be “playing” for “Team Canada” now? Anything like being sent back to the minors?

Ps: Haha. Funny.

TS: I do try.

Ps - Sure. I hear that if you don’t try, you never succeed, so keep at it.

(general laughter)

Ps: Admittedly, things are a little quieter here in Canada. But I’m glad to be back in the game again, and playing for my home team for a change. It’s nice to have the opportunity to do what I can do on behalf of Canada and it‘s people.

TS: I’m going to have to stray back into deeper waters again here, Powersurge. Sorry. But with all of this patriotism and belief in the Canadian system that you’ve been expressing, the question of why you ever fled Canada to begin with naturally arises. Care to comment on that?

Ps: No, I don’t mind. I fled because I was young, well, younger, and didn’t have a clue, literally. I did what I thought was best at the time, based on the information at hand, and really, I can’t argue with the road that choice led me down. My immediate concern just following the Winnipeg Incident was to control my powers. I had an opportunity that promised me just that, so I took it, and it paid off.

TS: That opportunity coming in the form of the one time *renegade* American mutant group known as the X-Men?

Ps: Yes.

TS: How did you know you could trust them, but not your own government?

Ps: I didn’t. Either way. But I’m not at liberty to discuss the specifics of that situation. Suffice it to say that I made an “executive decision“, and both the short and long term results were positive.

TS: Well, knowing your track record, I won’t argue with that! Sorry if I seemed to be getting a little pushy on some points, but “enquiring minds want to know”. And I hope we have managed to assuage that thirst for knowledge, with some knowledge from the source, for you our viewers. On that note, I would like to thank you for taking the time to join us here today, Powersurge, and answering a few of the questions Canadians might have about you.

Ps: My pleasure Ms. Sullivan. Thank you for the opportunity.

History: Update

Acting again as the chief Field Commander of the U.N.'s Protectors, Powersurge led an absolutely massive team -- including the Examiner, Battlehammer, Morningstar, Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, Binary, Black Panther, USAgent, Darkstar, Crymson Dynamo, Radioactive Man, Blitzkreig, Shamrock, and Peregrine -- to an orbiting A.I.M. space station known as the Gravity Well and there confronted the would-be Emperor of all Earth, Graviton. In the ensueing battle, with Graviton making short work of the assembled Protectors, Avengers, and Fantastic Four, Powersurge ordered his fellow X-Man, Shadowcat, to get the drop on Graviton and phase him into the floor. While reluctant to do so, Powersurge persuaded her that the magnitude of the situation, and both the nature and raw power of Graviton demanded such a course of action. However, when Shadowcat failed to surprise the Master of Gravity, and he momentarily increased the gravtional pull of the sun on her in retaliation, Powersurge was forced to finally put the life supprting properties of his energy sheath to the test and chase the young mutant into spaces in hopes of saving her from certain death.

While somewhat at a loss as to how he would save her with his energy sheath on, fortune nevertheless smiled on the mutants as Powersurge spotted a derelict Shi'ar floating nearby. Placing himself on a trajectory for the craft that owuld intersect with Shadowcat, Powersurge deactivated his energy sheath at the last possible moment and snagged his fellow mutant, and then managed to remain conscious long enough for the momentuum to carry him and Shadowcat to the vessel; where he further managed to get the two of them inside and hit the ship's life support before at last passing out.



Upon regaining consciousness, Powersurge found that Shadowcat was already up and busy pecking away at an onboard computer. Having informed him that the ship was basically running on fumes, and that soon even the life support would fail, Shadowcat encourage Powersurge to leave her and make his way back to others. However, remembering something he had been told during his tenure as an X-Man, the energy generator decided instead to recharge the cell with a focused pulse-blast. Shadowcat protested saying that such an action could kill him, but Powersurge retorted that while it might, leaving her onboard with the life support about to fail would most certainly kill her and that it was his responsibility to ensure her safety. He then ordered Kitty to set the energy cells to the proper calibration and then let loose with the ultiamte expression of his power. Powersurge collapsed thereafter, again suffering from cardiac arrest, but while the energy cells were damaged and thus lossing energy relatively quickly, they were neverthleess charge to capacity, allowing for communications and at least a couple of hourse of life support. Thus, Shadowcat resuscitated Powersurge and got him into the ships med-bed before sending out a distress call.



In the meantime, the remaining heroes managed to at last save the Earth from Graviton and the blackhole he had become/brought into being. Soon following which Shadowcat and Powersurge were themselves rescued, and the latter was immediately taken to a S.H.I.E.L.D. medical unit were he remained for over a week, with several days spent in a coma.

Upon his release, Powersurge was sidelined by Department H until he was once again field worthy, and so decided to spent a bit of time in jolly ole England, visiting Nightcrawler and Shadowcat. While there, Kitty introduced him to the mutant Psylocke (NOTE: Psylocke was not tranformed by the Seige Perilous and had remained in England since her emergeance) and a mutual attraction was immediately evident between the two.

At present Powersurge and Psylocke are getting better acquainted as Elizabth shares the sights of her homeland with him.
