He's not that helpless, and I don't mind not having a combat-oriented character since that niche is well filled by the others. Plus moving up his FAS shouldn't be very hard and at present they're better than many of the X-men had starting out.
Some power stunts to expand on the Force Field along with improving it to the next rank and it's a versatile defensive and offensive item and there's always that combat bonus from Cosmic Awareness to consider even without power stunts like Danger Sense.
