How powerful is the Impossible Man really?

It seems to me like the Impossible Man just doesn't get credited with the levels of power he actually possesses, perhaps because they focus too much on his impish nature and ignore his real abilities. He also tended to get treated as having a bit more of an awareness of serious events earlier on. We've seen him copy characters like Galactus and Thanos and engage matter-rearrangement and even teleport the entire X-men mansion and the grounds around it to an unknown location. While some have said he used technology of some sort that's very unlikely as he's never shown any interest or need of technology when he can become anything he wants and be fully functional.

The levels for his Power Duplication I think are quite low for his demonstrated abilities, and if he roleplays as a being too long he can even get caught up the being's personality like when he was copying Thanos. So what levels and kinds of powers would really make sense for him?

Yep, he's Marvel's Mr. Mxlplk (or however you spell it).

Based on some of the stuff Impy's done, it almost seems as if his only real limit is that he's more interested in playing around, having fun and engaging in lighthearted mischief, rather than doing anything serious or ambitious with his powers...

Like DC's Mister Mxyzptlk, Impy basically seems to be a walking plot device, able to do anything the writers want... While other characters have exhibited outrageous performances on occasion, due to writer fiat, Impy seems to do it as a matter of course...

It's *theoretically* possible he sometimes uses tech to augment his own formidable abilities, in order to pull off some of his more outlandish stunts (like kidnapping the X-Mansion). Impy's certainly not stupid, and, in one New Mutants Annual where he appeared, Impy seemed to have a rather large starship that he was using. If he does make use of a large vessel, it's possible it may have a variety of useful gadgets or toys aboard...perhaps even something to boost Impy's powers.

Just a thought...

Quack, damn you...

Well if you've checked out that 4-issue limited series Spider-man and the Fantastic Four we see the Impossible Man manufacturing large boulders (later turn out to be giant water balloons) and commenting how easy it is by turning his finger into a molecular combiner. When the combined nature of his people is later on released they demonstrate vast power and almost total invulnerability and without technology to help out.
