Physical Features

Personality

Snowbird is essentially an aloof, mysterious Elven princess with mystical perceptions and a regal attitude. Though she grew up at an impossible rate and quickly came to master simple skills (such as the English language or her filing job as Anne McKenzie), Harfang is a very young person and lacks experience, even with her own powers. During the late 1970s and early 1980s she was still making rookie mistakes, and occasionally experienced brief moments of fear - for instance she had never bled before Tolomaq cut her, and was so frightened by the experience that she had to pull herself together over the course of several seconds.

Her most common mistake was sheer overconfidence, as she kept assuming that she was more powerful than she actually is. This is presumably a result of her inexperience and not using her powers correctly yet. Narya is essentially a weapon - she was conceived at significant cost for but one purpose, to fight and kill the Great Beasts, and her mother becomes very cross if she strays from that. Snowbird herself as an almost animal hatred of the Great Beasts, which induces rash actions and poor planning when confronting these powerful opponents. She is adamant about fighting evil, even if it involves summarily dragging other powerful people (such as Talisman or Northstar) into battle without giving them a choice - she never had one herself.

Snowbird is a disciplined magic soldier, and her disciplinarian relatives treat her little better than an attack dog. She doesn’t have much room to relax and enjoy herself, but she obviously loves flying in the wilderness in quasi-human form, and hunting as a owl for as long as is safe. After the Beasts were apparently all killed, she decided that she was fed up with her duties and wanted to have a private life, have sex and take an interest in mortal life - but at the first emergency she resumed being Snowbird. Shaman is Snowbird’s foster father, and she values and follows his advice and mentorship even though her childhood lasted but a few years. However, she is a demi-goddess and outranks him in matters mystical - the Inua seem to have a strict pecking order, as was demonstrated when Snowbird immediately prostrated in front of Talisman - making for an interesting dynamic between the two.

Strengths

Weaknesses

• After her death and rebirth, this limitation seems to have been corrected, as has been proven by her extended stay in space with the Plodex.

Narya is mystically bound to Canada and it's coastal waters. Should she leave she is unable to change shape or fly. She also will age rapidly, loosing 1 rank in each ability every two hours. Once all her abilities reach Feeble, she dies. Should she be returned to Canada whilst still alive she will regain powers and abilities equal to the rate at which they were reduced.

Equipment

• Signal Implant: The members of Alpha Flight had a small paging implant in their mastoid bone to receive an activation signal, though in practise those were seldom used, the effective range is unknown although seemed to range from one end of Canada to the other and from New York City well into Canada to reach the individual members: Consider the signal to be a Remarkable scrambled signal with a 3000 mile range that leads the members of Alpha Flight to wherever they need to be.

Contacts

Narya is a member of the Inuit (Eskimo-Aleut) pantheon of deities. She had connections with Alpha Flight (especially Shaman and Talisman) and also with Wolverine of the X-Men.

Special Notes

Personal History

Narya's origins trace back to ancient times when the Eskimo gods of the North battled the mystical Great Beasts for the fate of the world. Ultimately both parties were exiled from Earth, and as such the Eskimo gods sought to create an agent to prevent the Beasts' return. To that end, Nelvanna, goddess of the Northern Lights, mated with a human. With the midwifery assistance of Sarcee mystic Michael Twoyoungmen, Nelvanna gave birth to a daughter, Narya. Twoyoungmen bound the infant to the lands of Canada, allowing her to assume human form; however, she would weaken if she left Canada's borders.

Twoyoungmen raised the rapidly maturing Narya as his own daughter, and both were soon recruited into Alpha Flight as Shaman and Snowbird. Narya was given the human cover identity of RCMP Records Officer Anne McKenzie, as whom she met and fell in love with fellow officer Doug Thompson. Snowbird and her teammates protected Earth from the Great Beasts, but when Narya married Thompson and became pregnant with his child, the outraged Eskimo gods banned her from their realm. When Narya went to the Arctic alongside Doug and Shaman to give birth, the necessary magic accidentally revived the evil Pestilence, who had lain dormant underground there. Pestilence possessed Snowbird's newborn son and aged him into an adult, intending to menace Earth with his powers of death and decay. In the ensuing battle, Thompson and the baby were killed by Pestilence, and Vindicator was forced to kill a Pestilence-possessed Snowbird. The souls of Narya, her husband, and their child were then welcomed into the Gods' realm.

Snowbird's spirit occasionally returned to Earth until she was resurrected through a combination of science and magic by the terrorist organization AIM. Rescued by Alpha Flight, Narya rejoined the team. Narya, as the chosen one of the Northern Earth gods, joined the God Squad founded by the Council of Godheads. During their encounter with Nightmare she was deeply disturbed by survivor's guilt over the deaths of Alpha Flight and in her grief, she slept with Hercules. She survived the final battle alongside Hercules and Amadeus Cho to return to her native realm. When the Chaos King attacked, Narya's deceased friends from Alpha Flight were returned to the land of the living. Since they came back, she has reunited with them and reformed Alpha Flight.
