Powers

Magic: Master of Nature Magic Shaman will never use a power that may shape the mind of a person against his will. The following are magical abilities always available to him.

Personal

  • Alteration-Appearance: Shaman can change his own appearance, and if they are willing, the appearance of those around him with Remarkable ability. But he needs items from his pouch to do this.
  • Healing-Self: He can heal with Incredible ability. This sometimes requires an item from his mystical pouch.
  • Levitation/Flight: Shaman can levitate and fly at the same time. While this allows him a Remarkable power rank for Levitation, his magical Flight speed has only a Good ranking.
  • Sensing Evil: Shaman need not cast a spell because this inherent power will automatically warn of evil. This ability has a Remarkable area of effect.
  • All other Personal spells he may use are of an Excellent power rank.

Universal

  • Eldritch Beams/Bolts: Remarkable ability to cast forth mystical beams and bolts capable of Incredible damage.
  • Healing-Others: Shaman can heal others with Incredible ability. This sometimes requires an item from his mystical pouch.
  • Nature Control-All: Shaman has the ability to control all four basic elements and the Earth’s weather at Amazing rank. This magical ability is sometimes augmented by totems and spell components he pulls from his mystical pouch, for instance, powder to create a snowstorm. The exact relationship between his Nature Control power and his extradimensional pouch is unknown.
  • Plant Control: Shaman can control the growth and shape of plants, increasing their size one area per round. He cannot, however, make them grow more than ten areas. He uses this spell with Monstrous proficiency.
  • All other Universal spells he may use are of an Remarkable power rank.

Dimensional

  • The only known source of Dimensional energies used by Shaman is his mystical pouch.
    • Pan-Dimensional Blast: (Monstrous) Shaman can release energy from his pouch to negate any extradimensionally created spell or to send back any extradimensional creature to its home plane. He can teleport himself and others using magic powder from his pouch.
    • Time Travel: Shaman can use the Dimensional energies within his pouch to propel himself, and those he wishes to accompany him, back through time. When he travels he physically remains in the same location while time changes. Unlike most other time travelers, Shaman need not go to Limbo. The change in time only takes seconds.
    • Teleportation: (Incredible) Shaman's teleportation is dependent upon components from his mystic pouch.

Miscellaneous

  • Spell of Silence: (Automatic) No FEAT roll required.
  • All other Miscellaneous spells he may use are of an Excellent power rank.

Limitations

• In order to use his magic, Shaman must have his Grandfather's Medicine Pouch.

Equipment

  • Signal Implant: The members of Alpha Flight had a small paging implant in their mastoid bone to receive an activation signal, though in practise those were seldom used, the effective range is unknown although seemed to range from one end of Canada to the other and from New York City well into Canada to reach the individual members: Consider the signal to be a Remarkable scrambled signal with a 3000 mile range that leads the members of Alpha Flight to wherever they need to be.
  • Grandfathers Skull: Shaman learned all he knows of mysticism from the spirit of his dead grandfather, who was a Sarcee medicine man before Shaman became one. The focal point for this spirit is his grandfather’s decorated skull, which acts as a partial dimensional aperture for the grandfather to contact Shaman from whatever dimension of the afterlife he now resides in.
  • Great Key: The Great Key is an intricate, golden, five foot long staff that can open the nexus between the Earth dimension and the Realm of the Beasts. The nexus is found in the northern Canadian crater called the Eye of the World. By means of this staff Shaman may also battle beings in the astral, spirit, or other planes, including out-of-phase and intangible beings. The staff has Monstrous material strength, and in Shaman's hands inflicts Excellent damage, ignoring Body Armor. Little else is known of the key, possibly it acts as a Dimensional Aperture spell into other dimensions. It is usually kept in the Void dimension, which can be accessed through Shaman’s medicine pouch.
  • Eagle Crest: Shaman’s hat transforms into the shape of an eagle, which acts as a familiar. The spirit eagle may fly at Monstrous speeds, and enter the Astral Plane. Non-hostile spirits will not attack Shaman (as the result of a failed entreaty) as long as the eagle is present. The eagle’s stats are as those of a normal bird, but it cannot be slain.
  • Mystic Pouch: This small leather pouch is a Sarcee artifact, it hangs at Shaman's side. It is a nexus to the Void, another dimension which Shaman uses as a source of energy to create magic items and mystical spells. When in need, Shaman simply reaches into the pouch for the appropriate charm or object he needs. He must make a successful Psyche FEAT roll for it to come to his hand. This check may be made every round until the item appears. It is his gateway to other realms and states of being. It somehow keeps them all contained, providing an orderly framework to a universe of tremendous chaos. A character (other than Shaman) reaching into the Medicine Pouch cannot free his arm. Anyone other than Shaman looking into the pouch exposes the mind of the character to the Void, a coma-inducing madness, a Red Psyche Feat avoids this. If the pouch is truned inside out, everyone within 1 area is drawn directly into the Void which begins to expand into the Earth’s dimension. Anyone entering the Void needs to make a Reason FEAT roll every third round against a sanity-threatening experience. To close the dimension back up, two magic wielders of at least adept level are needed: one outside and one inside. If a powerful mystical force, such as a natural mage like Shaman, is introduced into the expanding Void, it will collapse back in on itself. While the adept outside the Void can slow down the rate of collapse a little, he must act quickly to snatch out the adept inside or lose him in the void forever. It is known that there are other pouches that have access into the Void, It is a vast dimension that crosses through different realities. At least once in the past Shaman has reached through and grabbed the hand of another mage who was reaching into his own mystical pouch and nexusing the same dimension. For gaming purposes, these pouches come in a variety of styles and shapes and purposes, While Shaman’s is tuned to the Nature school of magic, another mage could be tuned to a different order of universal school, like the Faerie school, or a dimensional school, like Raggadorr or Hoggoth. All of this should be decided at the creation of the item or generation of the character using it.

Special Notes

Personal History

Michael was not interested in learning his grandfather's arts, instead choosing to become a surgeon. When his wife Kathryn became sick, he vowed that he would find a cure for her. However, she soon died. His daughter Elizabeth became angry at him, and was taken in by the MacNeils. Michael spent his time in the wild as a recluse. He was visited by his grandfather's spirit and learned the magical arts. He also encountered a goddess and helped her deliver her child, Snowbird. James and Heather Hudson met Michael and Snowbird and invited them to join Alpha Flight. Shaman joined partially because he was concerned with how the young Snowbird would be used. He took the name of Shaman, using both his mystic and medical talents. After Sasquatch was killed by Snowbird, Shaman used the Great Key to transport the team to the Realm of Great Beasts. There they found Walter's spirit. With Boch's permission, Shaman placed it into the Box robot. When reunited with his daughter Elizabeth, both Shaman and Snowbird realized she was fated to wear the talisman. He asked her to look into the pouch and then reach for something. She did, pulling the talisman which then affixed to her head.

He later abandoned his magic after nearly being killed due to the pouch being turned inside out. He renewed his skills and passed several tests to prove his worthiness. As gifts for succeeding, he was given a caribou robe and an eagle crest hat. Shaman briefly had to use the talisman when Elizabeth foolishly summoned Pestilence. His passing of his tests meant he too was worthy enough to wear it. Acting as Talisman made him distance himself from the others, as the warder of spirits cannot let other things get in the way of his or her mission. Later, Elizabeth reclaimed the talisman, seemingly having learned her lesson. Shaman temporarily left the team to meet with the Arctic gods. He returned during the Infinity Crusade as many heroes battled the Goddess. Shaman continued to be withdrawn, especially after briefly taking the team to the Land of the Dead in an attempt to see his wife again. Shaman later served as an adviser to Gamma Flight while Elizabeth recovered from serious injuries.
After Department H dismantled Alpha Flight and then formed a new team with several new additions, Shaman found himself drawn to find Walter Langowski. The two then found the wounded Guardian in Antarctica. The three joined with Northstar and Aurora to confront their teammates about Department H's true plans. All eventually were reunited. Shaman has trained a protege, Earthmover to take over much of his duties. He still continued to be involved with Alpha Flight. However, he is believed dead after their battle with the Collective. He and Guardian and Vindicator and Puck, did end up being revealed to be deceased when they were seen in the Underworld, however due to the Chaos King warring on all reality, they were released and brought back to the land of the living. Since his return, Shaman has rejoined Alpha Flight in service of the Canadian Government.
