History

The brainchild of the original Sidewinder, the Serpent Society is a group of costumed criminals whose identities are all based around snakes. Enlisting Black Mamba, Anaconda, and Death Adder, he sent them to various other snake-criminals as emissaries, trying to convince them that a criminal organization run as a professional business would improve all of their careers; the Serpent Society acts as a management team for their operatives, accepting contracts and assigning teams. In exchange, members get full room and board, health benefits, increased job opportunities, and technical support. They were able to recruit Asp, Bushmaster, Cottonmouth, Princess Python, Rattler, and Diamondback, and Sidewinder led them to their base of operations, a sanitarium in upstate New York which he had recently purchased. The first few missions of the Serpent Society had their ups-and-downs; Death Adder was killed by Scourge, Princess Python deserted, and ultimately Diamondback would resign because of her desire to reform, and to be close to Captain America. Viper plotted to take over the Serpent Society, infliltrating several of her own operatives into the group (Black Racer, Slither, Boomslang, Coachwhip, Puff Adder, and Rock Python), and poisoning Sidewinder. Ironically, Sidewinder would recruit Diamondback and the Captain to foil her plan.

Bitter over his betrayal, Sidewinder resigned, leaving the leadership to Cobra (who would come to style himself King Cobra). Black Mamba and Asp left the Serpent Society to strike out on their own, attempting to reform as their close friend Diamondback had done. Many of the Serpent Squad were taken into custody after their defeat in Las Vegas by Captain America.
